Joint project of the Cameroon Railway Corporation (CAMRAIL) and MINFOF, Funding: World Bank 2013-2015
This project is the continuation of a first phase lasting for thirty (30) months and technical support was provided by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) which enabled the actions of the Ministry in charge of Forests and Wildlife (MINFOF) and the Cameroon Railways Corporation (CAMRAIL) to be carried beyond Cameroon on matters concerning wildlife protection along the stretch of the Yaounde-Ngaoundere railway.
This phase 2 which involves the sustainability of the achievements of the first phase and appropriation by stakeholders is to:
- develop efficient strategies to fight against poaching through the eradication of the transportation of illegal wildlife products by train along the stretch of the Yaounde-Ngaoundere railway; these strategies include technical support through training, capacities building in anti poaching, environmental education and sensitization campaigns in the project area;
- insure the monitoring and evaluating of the impact of project activities, including the behaviour of poachers, of CAMRAIL agents and of the Ministry in charge of forests and wildlife and the impact on the supply and cost of bush meat in the markets of the project’s area of influence;
- facilitate the effective tools appropriation by stakeholders to eradicate the transport by train of illegal wildlife products.
Started in October 2013 the official launching date, the first year’s activities of the project was focused on three (03) components namely: sensitization, control and searches, project monitoring.
